"WHO ARE THESE MEN THAT WE HONOR TODAY?"
Written by Bob Dyberg
They are Air Rescuemen. Dedicated and patriotic members of the United States Air Force.
Air crews, pararescuemen and ground support personnel. Operating as a team of dedicated and professional airmen. Their mission, to rescue downed aircrews and U.S. friendly forces from behind enemy lines.
Emergency Air Rescue had its beginnings and proved its value in World War II. During peacetime "cold war" years, the Air Rescue Service was formed and operated 44 air rescue squadrons world-wide. Their mission, to perform emergency rescue operations and to develop the equipment and procedures needed for future combat air operations.
Air Rescue men subsequently demonstrated many daring feats of rescue and valor, both in peacetime and in war. During the Korean Conflict, over 9,000 United Nations aircrew and other military personnel were returned to safety. 996 of those fighting men were rescued from behind enemy lines to fight again. During the Vietnam War, they again made numerous rescue saves under similar but more challenging conditions of enemy opposition, weather, and jungle terrain.
Air Rescue call signs, "Crown," "King," "Dumbo," "Pedro," and "Jolly Green," coming over the air waves, were welcome and encouraging sounds to those aircrews performing hazardous combat missions, and to those aircrew members downed behind enemy lines.
Air Rescue performed with great distintion in both Korea and Vietnam, winning more personnel medals and unit awards than any other Air Force unit in those theaters. But all was not glory, as some of our men did not come home.
So, today we honor all Air Rescuemen who
have taken their "last flight," whether in peacetime or war. We honor
them for doing these things
"That Others May Live."
And, lest we forget, we also honor those departed wives who stood behind their husbands over the years, not knowing when they would be called out, or when they would return.
God bless them all, and God bless America.
