Why do you need a doula?

Women deserve doulas. Whether laboring at home, in a birth center, or in the hospital, all women and their partners deserve to have a woman in their presence whose skills, energy and heart are all concentrated on one person—the woman in labor. All women deserve the nurturing and support a doula can offer along with the benefits of a doula-assisted birth. Doulas use pain-reducing techniques and skills to help you have the birth you imagine.

Many mothers-to-be come to me with reluctant partners who are afraid I will take their place during the birth. A doula should not and could not ever replace a partner. A doula is a reassuring, calming, knowledgeable presence for both the mother and her partner. Please see my "Dads and Doulas" section for more information.
