Classroom Expectations

General Classroom & Course Expectations

Expectations:
1. Follow directions
2. No food, drink, or gum in class
3. Be on time (in assigned seat when the bell rings)
4. Communicate appropriately (no talking out of turn! no profanity)
5. Be prepared for class (bring book, notebook, homework, pen, pencil)

I. Classroom procedures:
1. Your grade:
                         15% = in class assignments/homework

10% = notebook

25% = tests/quizzes
                         25% = participation/behavior (attendance & promptness areimportant!)

25% = Nine-week exam

2. A three-ring binder with pockets will be required for this course. You will be taking notes and be given handouts that you will need to organize and keep together. Notebook checks will be made periodically and will be part of your grade (10%). Also required is an Internet sticker and school ID so that you may use the Internet lab.

3. Homework is to be submitted on due dates when you enter the classroom. Otherwise, the work is late and you will only receive ½ credit. Assignments more than one day late will not be accepted.

4. It is your responsibility to obtain any missed assignments, notes, tests, etc. when you are absent. Assignments and activities for the week are written on the chalkboard. Further, there is a calendar on the bulletin board that lists what we do in class everyday, assignments, tests, etc. for your reference. Make up work can be obtained from the "make-up work" box. Make up assignments are due the day after you return to class. Make up work is not to be done during class time. Tests and quizzes are always announced in advance. Therefore, being absent the day before a test does not give you an extension. If you are absent the day of the test, you are expected to take it the day you return to class. All tests will have a make up deadline. Make up tests are given after school and cannot be taken past this deadline.

5. All work must include your name, date, and period in order to receive full credit.

6. In keeping with school policy, cheating on class work or tests (not doing your own work, copying, letting others copy your work, etc. will result in an "F". Copying another person's homework is cheating!

II. Participation/behavior: You earn up to 10 points per day

Everyday when you enter class you will find your file folder on your desk. When you leave class you must leave the file folder on your desk. Failure to do so will result in zero points for that day. The file folder has your total daily points for each day. At the end of each period you will correctly fill out the checklist for the day. (Checklists which are filled out incorrectly will result in further point deductions.) I will total the daily points. Just because you check off an item does not mean you receive credit for that item. My judgement as to whether you deserve credit on an item is final.

1. Attendance is very important and directly affects your grade. All absences result in the loss of these 10 daily points.

Making up points due to absences: If you are absent, a make up assignment will be in your folder. Participation points can only be made up for the first 2 unexcused absences per nine weeks. You may always make up all work for credit when your absence is excused. You have the number of days absent to make up missed work. All daily work is to be submitted in your folder. When it has been checked you need to remove it and put it in your notebook. If you fail to remove items from your folder once they are graded I will throw them away at my discretion!

2. You are to be in your assigned seat and ready to begin class when the bell rings. Otherwise, you will be counted tardy. Tardiness results in the loss of 1 point per day. You are given a referral on your third tardy. When you are tardy you must sign in on the clipboard on the table by the door. If you have a pass, show it to me immediately. If you are more than 15 minutes late to class you are considered absent for the day even if it is excused.

3. Leaving the classroom is strongly discouraged. Each time you do so will cost you a point. This includes trips to the restroom, locker, water fountain, other teachers, etc. When leaving the classroom for any reason, you must sign out and back in on the clipboard. If you fail to do so properly, 2 points will be deducted from your daily total. A pass gives you 5 minutes to get where you are going and back. For each additional 5 minutes you are gone, you will lose another point. You get three passes per nine weeks, so save them for emergencies. Do not leave class without a pass!

4. Please sharpen pencils before/after class, as the electric pencil sharpeners are very disruptive.

5. Keep the area around your desk neat. Do not leave paper/trash on the floor and do not throw trash across the room at the trashcan.

6. Remain in your seat at the end of the class period until I dismiss you. Do not stand by the door waiting for the bell.

7. Do not sleep or put your head on your desk in class.

8. Do not complete homework for other classes in world history class.

9. Radios, headphones, c.d. players, pagers, laser pointers, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in class.

10. Stand for the pledge of allegiance and do not talk during morning announcements.

11. Do not touch items belonging to the teacher or school without permission such as the overhead, TV, computer, VCR, fans, bulletin board, etc.

12. Per school policy, students are not allowed to use classroom telephones or teachers' computers.

III. Consequences

Poor behavior and the failure to meet classroom expectations will result in the deduction of participation points. Repeat poor behavior will result in parent notification, classroom detention, and referrals, in addition to point deductions. Classroom detentions are to be served on Fridays from 2:30 3:00. Detention notices must be signed by parents or the detention cannot be served. Failure to serve detention on the day assigned will result in an automatic referral.
