Jonathan Swift, considered by many to be the greatest English satirist, was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1667. The highly intelligent young man entered Trinity College in Dublin when he was 14 years old and received a Bachelor of Arts degree four years later. He became the dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and was one the Dublin's foremost citizens. Two of Swift's best known works are Gulliver's Travels and "A Modest Proposal. The air of authenticity and realism used in these and other satiric works induced many contemporary readers to believe them to be true.

During the first nine weeks we focus upon writing and simple analysis. Your term grade will be based upon your essays (65%), RRJ (15%), and your project/presentation (20%). This is subject to change. If you budget your time wisely you will have ample time to complete the required work. However, if you choose to procrastinate, you may feel overwhelmed..
I encourage you to check libraries, secondhand book stores, and last year's students before purchasing any new book. You may also wish to team with a student in another class to share the cost of the books. In addition some books are available online.
Please make note assignment deadlines. No late work will be accepted without prior permission from me. Your presentation date will be assigned in advance. If you are absent your group must still present and will be graded accordingly.
This is not a creative writing class, although you will have a variety of "creative" writing assignments throughout the year. Generally, you will write analytically demonstrating your ability to produce insightful essays based upon a variety of prompts. Annotate all of your essays. If you are absent on Friday, your essay is due on Monday unless other arrangements are made.
There are very few rules in this class. You are expected to conduct yourself maturely and to respect others. Keep in mind that all misbehaviors will have consequences.
