Dating Your Singer Machine                        UPDATED:     September 16. 2007

The information provided in the AF and AG serial number manufacture date tables has been verified with Singer's Customer Service.

-  Manufacture dates for AF000001 - AF621880

  -  Manufacture dates for AF621881 - AF999999

- Manufacture dates for AG000001 -  AG414999

- Manufacture dates for AG416214 -  AG999999

Please note that these are not actual machine manufacture dates; the dates are simply an allotment of serial numbers to a production run of machines.  When the dates were actually assigned is unknown. It most probably was done before the production run for scheduling purposes, but could have been done during the production process. It is also unknown whether the date assigned to the series of numbers represents an assumption of the beginning of the production process, the production run completion date, or some arbitrary point between the two.

To determine the 'manufacture' date of your Singer machine, you must first obtain the serial number from the machine. On family-use machines within the AF and AG time frame, the serial number will contain two letters followed by six numbers.

On Singer Featherweight 221's, the serial number will be stamped into a rectangular-shaped raised area on the underside of the machine. Singer 221 Serial Number Location

On most other models, the serial number will be stamped into an oval area on the right front bed of the machine directly in front of the machine arm. Singer 99 Serial Number Location

If you are interested in finding the manufacture date for Singer serial numbers other than AF and AG, Singer's website has Adobe Acrobat files containing all Singer serial number series.

The database of original sales receipts now contains 248 entries, 86 of which are AF or AG serial-numbered machines.

The longest time between manufacture date and sale date of the 248 entries is 6 years 3 weeks; the shortest time is 22 days. The average time between manufacture date and sale date is 13 months.

Additionally, I have obtained copies of thirteen original packing slips ranging from zero days to 629 days after the manufacture date. There is not enough data to draw any conclusions.
