Excerpt from Singer
in World War II, 1939-1945 (Published 1946).
Special mention should be made of the heavy duty Class 144W machine with
reverse feed mechanism which has been furnished in large quantities as Mobile Unit
Equipment. Installed in different types of vehicles, it has been used at the various war
fronts for mending uniforms and articles of heavy canvas, such as tents, tarpaulins, etc.
This machine has been the subject of a Press Notice Release by the Bureau of Public
Relations on January 12, 1945, which release includes a photograph of an Army Private on
the Italian front working at a Class 144W machine. The text of the release points out that
the Private in question could "handle all of the machines of this type that can be
built".
