Mosquito Lagoon, on the east coast of Florida an hour from Orlando, is our well-kept secret.  Hidden in the middle of the pristine Merritt Island Wild Life Sanctuary, it is completely unspoiled. The aquatic vegetation and fish are abundant here. Mosquito Lagoon is famous for monster seatrout and redfish.  The average depth of the lagoon is only 3 feet, making it a sight fisherman's paradise. In recent years the Lagoon has become known as the redfish capitol of the world with fish scaling 30-40 pounds not uncommon.  Large gator seatrout of 8+ pounds are also becoming more plentiful since the net ban went into effect.

The amount of plant and animal life along the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is truly staggering. There are over 4,315 different species found in the region, which includes 1,350 plant species, 2,956 animal species including 700 salt and freshwater fish, and 310 bird species.

An estimated one-third of Florida's endangered manatees live in the IRL. The IRL is so bountiful because it is geographically located in a transition area between the temperate zone and the tropical zone and contains five different ocean inlets.

The IRL stretches for 155 miles and encompasses three major bodies of water:  Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River and the Banana River.
