Each year the United States Coast Guard
Auxiliary has the privilege of selecting several highly qualified
young men and women to participate in the Academy Introduction
Mission (Project AIM). Project AIM is a five day program
conducted in late July and early August at the United States Coast Guard Academy
in New London, Connecticut. Two hundred young men and women,
selected by the Auxiliary, will participate at the Academy. There
is no fee for applying to this program, but those selected to
participate will be charged $125 to defray the costs of meals.
AIM participants live the routine of new cadets, from reveille to
taps, experiencing many of the exciting activities of Coast Guard
Academy freshman.
The Basic Requirements for Participation in
"Project AIM" are:
Any Junior who meet these requirements, and is SERIOUSLY
interested in applying for Project AIM, must submit the following
by March 15:
(1) An AIM Application;
(2) PSAT or SAT results;
(3) A transcript and the student's rank in class (if
available);
(4) Three (3) brief recommendations - one from a counsel or
teacher, one from a coach, and one from a third party, such
as an employer, scoutmaster, clergyman or other person who
has knowledge of the student's character.
Personal interviews will be arranged for those
students whose applications are complete, and merit further
consideration.
We feel that this may be an outstanding
opportunity for Juniors who might be interested in the Academy
and a nautical career as a Commissioned Officer in the United
States Coast Guard. The United States Coast Guard Academy is the
only national service Academy whose admission is strictly by
academic competition and not by congressional appointment. Also,
there is no geographical quota on Coast Guard Academy
appointments.
