CE Civil Engineering Car

In 1935 the engineering department decided it needed its own car, the order was given to the shop superintendent to build such a car - a Civil Engineering car to be designated "CE". Problems arose, however, when the shop superintendent discovered that insufficient funds had been budgeted for "CE", so he combined whatever materials and equipment he could find. The management of LA&CCRR let him use a flat car waiting to be rebuilt., and parts of a wrecked combination car pulled from Clifty Creek. since a flat car was the starting point, the finished car would have no passenger stairs. The trucks under the combination car were destroyed when it went into the creek, so a pair of logging truck were used. The absense of passenger car trucks and stairs gives the CE car a "make-do", low budget utilitarian look. This was my second scratch build car and was truly fun to build. I used a Big Train Backshop 30' Wood flat car kit and a Bachman Combination kit. Plans and story line from Narrow Guage and Short Line Gazette May/June 1996 Page 55.
