Obligatory Fight Scene
Circling, gears meshing, orbiting. Each influences the others epicycles. Inexorable influence, gravity and the inverse square law. At times like this it isn't hard to know what the future holds. Fuzzy would weaken slowly and eventually be overwhelmed by his larger opponent. Even if he managed to win, his injuries would see to it that he never saw the sun rise again. They drifted around each other in a slow waltz of feints. Each gentle caress of talon on flesh brought with it an increase in the flow of blood. Blood flowing in unsteady trickles from side, flank and muzzle. Mixed with the blood a transformative payload. The virus, swimming against the current, shrugging off antibodies. A single tangled strand of pure information. Information that demands to be free.
Fuzzy kept low, belly protected on the sand. The larger doe kept trying to either roll him and expose the tender belly or clamp the base of his skull and bear him away to Inle's kingdom. He kept low to avoid her first intent and launched his own attacks toward her belly to avoid the second. If he hadn't taken such a beating from the car crash, Fuzzy might have won. Despite her advantage in size, she seemed to lack the experience or training to press it. Fuzzy painfully deflected another assault on his side. He coughed, tasting blood.
"Surrender now and I'll go easy on you."
Heartwyrm stopped. She recovered, and barked out a harsh laugh.
"You're in no position to make demands, little bunny. Why don't you
give up? I'll make it quick for you."
"I can't do that Madame Monster. I appreciate the offer though."
The smell of fear wasn't as strong as she'd come to expect from past encounters with prey. This one was different. Even the grinching hadn't affected this morsel as long. She raked her claws towards his flanks, missing narrowly when he hopped sideways. The smell of his blood tainted the air and filled her head. The aroma was exciting and enticing. She was getting hungry again even though she'd already eaten. Maybe it was best the other one had gotten away. She'd never have been able to eat both before they spoiled. If only they were closer to the base. Her thoughts were cut short by a counterattack, claws cutting her flank.
"I tell you what, snack. Give up now and I'll let you decide how you
get prepared."
"That's very kind of you, but I have to decline."
Heartwyrm grinched again, watching the wave of pain pass through her dancing partner. She could sense him slowing. Soon she'd have him. Fuzzy managed to muster a fluff. He'd used up most of his reserves recovering from the grinchings and so it wasnt very powerful. The monster was surprised by it though and backed off a few steps. The sense of sweetness and warmth rolled over her revoltingly. It was bad enough that this little regbun had resisted so long but ruining her appetite was too much. Heartwyrm leapt, landing solidly on the battered buck. Her fangs glistened in the moonlight for the brief instant before they buried themselves in his shoulder. Fuzzy squealed like a kit denied Frithmas toecake, a mix of anger and pain. Pain not only from the teeth in his flesh but also from knowing that he had lost. Knowing that he had lost his last fight. Somehow he managed to roll and kick his tormentor off. Fuzzy tried to hop backwards out of range but sank helplessly into the sand. He raised himself up and spoke.
"lying in the sand
the late winter wind blows
clouds across her face"
Heartwyrm blinked.
"What was that little bunny?"
"The Mother in Shadows enjoys poetry, I've been told it's a good idea
to have some ready for for her."
"still the prettiest"
Was this why she was here? To listen to the death poem of a bunny? No other morsel had tried to recite peotry. Something was different. This bunny claimed to serve the dark face of Luna.
Fuzzy tried to rise, to demand to be killed. He'd lost too much. At least he'd gotten the poem out. He hoped it was acceptable or at least enough to balance his loss to the wyrmdoe slowly advancing on him.
