I live in a 30 square mile town of 31,000 people called The City of Apopka , famous for being the Indoor Foliage Capital of the World and famous for having the longest-running mayor in the United States. Apopka is a Timiquan Indian word meaning "big potato". My town is also famous for youth sports; our high school football team won the State Championship a few times, and our Little League baseball team won the U.S. National Title at the 2001 Little League World Series.

2006 Apopka Art & Foliage Festival was in April. There are a lot of great festival pictures that I took in this link.

Apopka's local school and city happenings in The Apopka Times.

Blast Off!
From our front yard we can watch the rocket and space shuttle launch from Kennedy Space Center, which is about an hour away.

Newspapers
We subscribe to the daily newspaper, The Orlando Sentinel, and our much smaller weekly newspaper, The Apopka Chief.

Our Week at Cocoa Beach
We have a summertime timeshare week at Ocean Landings Resort in Cocoa Beach, Florida, which is about an hour's drive from our home, so we visit often during the rest of the year to use the pool and beach. On this site, you can hear a recording of the sound of normal ocean waves on the beach. It's loud... this was not recorded during a storm. My family enjoys the milder waves of Cocoa Beach to body surf and boogie board on. Surfing is better an hour north in the Ponce Inlet area, but there are more shark attacks there.

Shark Attack
In the summer of 2001, while surfing at Ponce Inlet with a friend, my son’s high school girlfriend (they remain friends) was attacked by an 8 foot Bull Shark. Brave Becky still surfs at Ponce Inlet! She is not disabled in any way, and is a normal active college student and she is proud of her pretty impressive scar. I've lived in Florida all of my life and Becky is the only person I have ever met that has been attacked by a shark .

Our North Carolina Mountain House
We own a second home in the town of Beech Mountain, North Carolina, which we rent out to vacationers. We finished off the basement for our own use, and we do allow renters in this portion of our home. Our plan is to live here parttime after we retire. The local ski resort, Ski Beech, has a pretty good webcam and weather link.
