Notes

[NI024] Luther's Obituary states the funeral services were held at "Whigham Baptist Church, where he was a member and he served on the Board of deacons. The Revs. Mark Boyd and Leon Vanlandingham officiated and interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery, with Clark Funeral Home in charge of arrangements."

[NI057] 1. Allen McCarty's parents, I believe, were John McCarty and Barchet/Burgett Cook. Below is the evidence to support my belief:

2. According to "40,000 Early Georgia Marriages", a John McCarty married a Barchet Cook on January 14, 1810 in Clark Co, GA (a neighboring county to Walton Co, GA).

3. In Walton County, GA, a John McCarty died in 1838 (see return record E-2 (1839-1843)). Allen McCarty and Isaac Martin are listed as co-administrators.

4. Isaac Martin is specifically identified as a son-in-law (Isaac Martin married Zany McCarty 4-15-1828 and I think she is Allen's sister) while Allen McCarty is not specifically listed as a son.

5. On 11-16-1838 a sale was conducted to sell off John McCarty's belongings. Several McCartys purchased goods. Purchasers at the sale include the following McCarty's: James A. McCarty, Lucinda McCarty (she bought "one lot of books" for .375, "one cow" for 13.50, and "one saddle" for 3.50), Virgin McCarty, John McCarty, Isaac Martin (Zany McCarty's husband). Also, purchasing at the sale was a Cornelius Elliott, who later married the widow, Barchet/Burgett Cook McCarty in 1841/1842 (see below).

6. Several years later, in the Annual Returns 1866-1870, Book Q, Page 563 - 564 at Walton Co the Final Return of Allen McCarty was filed. In this final return several McCartys are mentioned. Others, besides Allen McCarty and Isaac Martin, receiving distribution from John McCarty's will are James S. Towler and Elizabeth B. Towler (James Towler married Elizabeth McCarty 9-8-1839 and I think she is another sister); O.G. McCarty, and finally E. G? Edwards & Lucinda Edwards (previously Lucinda McCarty).

7. Regarding Barchet/Burgett Cook, wife of John McCarty, and alleged mother of Allen McCarty; after John McCarty's death in 1838, she is listed as "Bridgett McCarta" in the 1840 Walton Co census as the head of the household, aged 50 to 60 years. Among others in her household are two males between 20 and 30, one being Allen McCarty, born 1812 and aged 28 in 1840 and unmarried. The book Wayfarers in Walton lists two marriage entries to Cornelius Elliott as follows: (1) Mrs. Burchett McCarty 4/29/1841 and (2) Burgett McCarty 3/22/1842. Cornelius Elliott was present at the sale of property John McCarty (see paragraph 5 above).

8. Regarding John McCarty, alleged father of my Allen McCarty; the "Leonardo Andrea" research dated 1954 provides "Notes on McCarty Family" from a Mrs. Howard McCall, Sr. of Atlanta, GA via Flossie L. Crouch 10/15/1954. In this, it provides family history that says a John McCarty lived in Walton Co, GA married and had a large family and died there. It says that this John McCarty had brothers James McCarty, born in Edgefield District, SC and moved to Alabama, and Charles McCarty who moved to Alabama, then later to Mississippi, where he died. It says there were "several brothers and sisters" but only these three (John, James and Charles) are mentioned. It says "I think these three brothers were sons of James McCarty of Edgefield District, SC who was a Rev. soldier of SC".
