Girls Go Tampa

The Tampa Bay area is rich in opportunities to explore, have fun and learn.  This list highlights a few of the resources that welcome Girl Scouts.  Most are day trips within the Council.  Experience the adventure of science, math and technology.  Enjoy health and safety programs.  Develop multicultural appreciation.

 

Science, Math and Technology

-         Florida Botanical Gardens - Learn about Florida Native and tropical plants and take a wildlife/nature tour throughout the gardens and trails in this part of the Pinewood Cultural Park. (727-582-2100)

-         Great Explorations Museum - Attend programs for Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts ranging from Music Makers to Robotics, from Water Exhibits to Animatrix. Complete some Brownie Try-It or Junior Badge requirements, while youıre there! (727-821-8992, ext. 215)

-         Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) - Enjoy a wide variety of programs for Girl Scouts of all ages!  Work on a Brownie Try-It, Junior Badge or Cadette/Senior Interest Project or Focus Book.  Participate in a sleepover, tour the museum or watch an IMAX movie. (813-987-6000) 

-         Sunken Gardens - Visit a botanical garden in the middle of a bustling city and take a nature hike, learn about plants from around the world and walk through a butterfly encounter. (727-551-3100) 

 

Animals

-         Clearwater Marine Aquarium - Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts plan field trips, day camps or participate in marine biology workshops to learn about marine animals. (727-441-1790)

-         Florida Aquarium - Complete some Brownie Try-It or Junior Badge requirements, participate in a sleepover or explore the Aquarium. (813-273-4015)  [Note ­ 2006 Educational Group Field Trip pricing is just $6 each!)

-         Lowry Park Zoo - Attend a program designed specifically for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts.  Complete Try-It/ Badge requirements, participate in a sleepover or have an animal encounter.  (813-935-8552, ext. 232) 

-         Manatee Viewing Center (TECO) - Learn about manatees and their habitats.  Stroll along the self-guided natural trail and view the tidal flatlands. (813-228-4289)

 

Multicultural and History Activities

-         Henry B. Plant Museum - Learn about the Victorian era in Florida in the elegant former Tampa Bay Hotel.  Programs are appropriate for Girl Scouts in grades 3 ­ 12.  Great progression step to prepare for a trip to the Juliette Gordon Low National Birthplace in Savannah, GA! (813-258-7304)

-         Tampa Bay History Center - Explore the colorful history of the Tampa Bay area.  Discover interesting facts about how our area traditions have grown, how towns and cities were named and the truth about some of our most famous residents. (813-228-0097) 

-         Florida Holocaust Museum - Learn about the impact of bigotry, prejudice, hatred and indifference.  Programs are appropriate for girls ages 9-18. (727-820-0100)

-         Florida International Museum - Visit educational, cultural and historical exhibits for Girl Scouts of all ages.  Exhibits change throughout the year. (727-822-3693)

-         Heritage Village - Travel back 150 years and learn how people lived in Pinellas County from the 1850s through the early 1900s!  Girls 12-18 years old can learn to be Junior Docents and lead workshops and tours. (727-582-2123) 

-         Kid City, Childrenıs Museum of Tampa - Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts will explore, imagine, and investigate at Kid City!  Choose from a variety of workshops, a sleepover or a group visit.  Work on requirements for Learning Petals or Try-Its. (813-935-8441)

-         Safford House - Learn about the first practicing female doctor in Florida!  Experience life in Tarpon Springs 100 years ago!  Programs are appropriate for Girl Scouts 8-18 years old.  Great progression step to prepare for a trip to the Juliette Gordon Low National Birthplace in Savannah, GA! -         St. Petersburg Museum of History - Explore the history of St. Petersburg from the Native Americans through the heritage groups and neighborhoods of today.  Learn about the first airplane flight from St. Petersburg to Tampa. (727-894-1052)

-         Ybor City State Museum - Learn about Tampaıs history from 1885-1939 and influence of Spanish, Cuban, Italian, Romanian, and German immigrants.  See the bakery, ovens, interpretation of cigar making and a restored cigar maker home. or 813-247-6323

-         Pioneer Florida Museum - Experience life as a Florida Pioneer!  Learn about the tools used to build houses, farming, cooking on a wood-burning stove, spinning weaving and farming.  Visit a one-room school house. (352-567-0262)

 

 

The Arts

-         Gulfcoast Museum of Art - Learn about contemporary art and participate in a multi-media workshop.  Exhibits change throughout the year. (727-518-6833)

-         Museum of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg - Enjoy art appreciation workshops and tours.  Exhibits change throughout the year. (727-896-2667, ext. 233)

-         Ruth Eckerd Hall - Enjoy Broadway theater productions, concerts and plays throughout the year. (727-791-7400)

-         Salvador Dali Museum - Visit the collection of the renowned Spanish artistıs work which includes Impressionist, Cubist and Surreal styles. (727-823-3767) 

-         Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center - Enjoy Broadway productions, dance and musical performances throughout the year! (813-229- 7827) 

-         Tampa Museum of Art - Experience different types of art from classical to contemporary.  Exhibits change throughout the year and workshops are available for Girl Scouts of all ages. (813-274-8130)
