FOGBUOY
The title of this page is Fogbuoy. Simply put, a fogbuoy was a towed station keeping device, usually a small timber, like a six-by-six, painted white, and towed astern on a light line by vessels in convoy, and in fog.
Used in pre-radar days, vessels could "keep station" - staying safely in position from the vessel ahead of it by keeping a constant eye on that vessels towed "fogbuoy". By adjusting the length of the tow-line, set distances could be maintained ahead, and astern while in column.
