Earl's Granada in 1998
Several sources have contributed to the information included on this site. Many of the photographs used in these pages are mine, or were furnished for use with permission. As I have expanded the catalog descriptions, I have included photographs that I have culled from the internet and at some point it occurred to me that I had gotten a little careless about getting permission for use. I have tried to correct this by requesting permission, often after the fact. But, if you find a photograph here that belongs to you and I have not contacted you about permission...let me know and we'll work something out.

UPDATE NEWS:
25 May 2003: Another year has gone by and here I am still using the same old computer and software...hence due to this and the demands of a new job, this site has still not undergone a serious update.I received a telephone call from Jim Mills about a week ago asking if I had the information on his gold plated RB-75 (453-2) as pictured on the Dixie Home CD. Jim has actually given me the information about this banjo months before but I had not update the web site. Jim's call a few emails from others has prompted me to finally get serial list updates.
This update adds 355 new serial number entries which brings the total number of instruments listed to over 2,000. Chris Hirsch and Don Hergert continue to correspond with me regularly on instruments that show up on the internet. Stan Werbin of Elderly Instruments provided an update on his list old Gibson banjos and John Croft (theukuleleman.com) helped out with some information on Gibson banjo ukes.
5 May 2002: I still haven't gotten around to the update I was planning last year. I do, however, keep up with maintaining a database of new serial number information even though updates to this website are not made often enough.
Since August last year, I have received about 230 new entries from various sources. These are included in this update bringing the total number of entries to over 1,700. This list, which was first published on the internet in June of 2000 with 200 descriptions, has taken on a life of it's own. Seldom does a day pass that I don't receive email correspondence that provides information, or corrections to the information on this list. Thanks to all who have contributed.
4 August 2001: Since December I have been planning a major overhaul to this site with a focus more on the banjos and less on friends and players. I have had several conversations with individuals willing to collaborate on this update, but given work and personal demands it has been difficult to find enough time to start this project.
A more minor update of serial numbers and updates to links has been long overdue and really shouldn't have been put off this long. This update adds about 200 instruments to the serial number database bringing the total number of instruments listed to about 1,500. For the most part these additions were generated by individuals who have contacted since December with information on instruments that they own. In addition, I have received great support from Texas banjo player Chris Hirsch and Don Hergert who regularly keep me informed about banjos that show up on the internet in one form or another.
3 December 2000: This update includes about 90 new entries from various sources. Jack Davis provided information on 10 instruments. The rest of the new information was gained from various individuals and the auction site.
Also included in this update are analyses of the serial number data base provided independently from Joe Spann and James Spiers. Links to pages that summarize each of these may be found at Prewar Gibson Banjo Serial Nos and Descriptions, or if you prefer to go direct use:
13 August 2000: It has been a little over a month since the last update. During this time I have not had much time on the computer. This update includes over 180 new entries to the serial number database. Joe Spann of Auberndale, Florida contributed significantly to this update by providing his list of banjo serial numbers and descriptions. Joe's information yielded over 100 new entries to the database. Watch for the next update which will include Joe's "statistical" analysis of the Gibson's banjo production. Masahiro Soutsu, of Japan, also contributed significantly to this update.9 July 2000: The current update includes about 60 new entries to the serial number data base that were contributed by several individuals. Quite a few of the new entries were provided from European enthusiast. Bernd Gassman, from Germany, provided about 15 new entries and my friend, Bertrand Coqueugniot, who is in France, provided about 10 entries. Thanks Bernd and Bertrand.
17 June 2000: The most recent update to this page adds about 135 new entries to the serial numbers and descriptions database. Over 100 of these new entries were provided by Steve Huber.
