Welcome to my Work and Life...
The intent of this website is to provide some visible work samples from previous jobs I have had in the course of my work life. I have held a wide variety of positions, however, most recently I was working as technical director and a professor at the University of South Florida in the School of Theatre & Dance.
Technical Direction:
Just exactly what is technical direction and what does a technical director do?
A technical director is a
* project manager
* master carpenter
* draftsman
* structural engineer
* manager of construction
* purchasing agent
Technical directors are also quite often responsible for facility maintenance and repair and purchasing, budgeting and scheduling. Many technical directors are also responsible for hiring and training all necessary personnel. In the case of a technical director who is also a professor, then teaching classes and managing scenic studio labs is also a part of the job description.
The job of a technical director is quite large and is often all consuming. The time that is necessary to perform all of the duties and responsibilities is typically much greater than the standard forty hour week and many weekends are spent on the job as well.
While there is a great deal of work involved, I find that I enjoy the process of theatre and even more so the end result. Theatre is about the play, the words of the playwright...and the work of the technical director is in support of that end.
