~11/21/2007~

On the 13th of November we were back at Cpt. Hiram's for a Lifehouse show.  (There is a blog post about this date by one of the band members here.)  This is a band that has recently gained popularity.  The show was originally scheduled for the 16th, but a Friday night show got to be too expensive for a small venue.  The crowd for this show was the best that I have seen for any show at Cpt. Hiram's.

Yesterday was the 7th annual SSA Deland Original Music Festival.  I had provided sound services for the event in 2005 and was contracted again this year for the main stage production.  The SSA has rented stage decks for most, if not all of these events, and I may have done sound some years prior to 2005.  This is a good event with a variety of musical styles ranging from hard rock through blues and country music.  The weather had been less than optimum for most of the last couple of weeks.  There was even a hurricane in the Atlantic that moved northeast on long legs last week.  Friday was cloudy and threatened rain.  Saturday morning dawned clear, and the event day was beautiful.  There were bands scheduled from 1 PM to 1 AM, and there was also an acoustic stage with solo and duo acts covering the bands set changes.  The schedule is very tight for this event and we eventually got behind.  Show staff had to shorten the sets for some of the bands to catch up.

The bands that performed on the stage were:   Ed Mcurdy & The Intruders- Blues Rock, Art Carter & Nothing But Trouble- Modern Country Rock, Snackdaddy Rock-  Orlando, INERVOICE BAND- ROCK,  DAYTONA, No Circus- Rock/Classic Rock/Blues, DeLand, Broken Center - Alternative Rock, Deland,  Mirror Pal- Progressive Indie Rock, Orlando, Mohave- Americana, Orlando, Weszt- Rock-  Orlando, Big Jef Special Blues/Bluegrass, DeLand/Orlando, and Dish- Folk Rock, DeLand.  Performers on the acoustic stage were:  Yvonne and Logan, Stephen Grayce - folk/rock, Apopka, FL, Sleepin' Dogz- Acoustic, Rock, Blues, Folk Vero Beach, christian summer Acoustic Deland, Sound Proof- FOLK/ JAZZ/ BLUES LAKE WORTH, Mark Chiriboga- Rock/Blues/Jazz, Day Bch., Natalie Wright - Folk Orlando, FL, and woodshedcollective.  (These are as copied off the SSA web site, including capitalization.  They maybe as the artists prefer.)

Once again there are several things to report.  The past two weeks have been very busy including the shows and events plus setting up and tearing down for these.  On Monday 10/15 I worked a party at a local venue, Red Tail Sports Bar, sponsored by Red Tail and Wide Open Cycles at which the Razorbacks played.  The evening was less than optimum with intermittent rain showers.  This was an outdoor gig on the patio, so the band had several enforced breaks.  This was at the beginning of the Daytona fall rally, Biketoberfest which is written up on the Rally News page.

After the rally, on Wednesday October 24th, it was back down to Capt. Hiram's to set up for a Sick Puppies show.  Some of you may have seen the UTube video Free Hugs, which used a Sick Puppies song for the audio track.  I understand that the video got over 2 million hits.

On Saturday, October 27th, I worked the Halloween Party at Cancun Lagoon in Daytona.  This is planned to be an annual affair.  The weather did not co-operate so the spirits were damped a bit, so to speak.  A band from Jacksonville, Yankee Slickers, played the event.

Thursday I set up the rig for a Dickey Betts show with his band Great Southern at Capt. Hiram's in Sebastien Florida.  This was a bit hectic because of the size of the stage verses the size of the band, but as Rich Cramer (Dickey's front of house engineer) said, "it is another adventure".  I usually think of adventures as breaking down on the side of the road, but this maybe was not so much different.  The show was very good, so it was all worth while.  This is a great band!  If you like to hear Allman brothersish guitar harmonies I recommend that you go out of your way to take in this show if you have the opportunity.

Of course, I am past due in updating this page.  On the 13th I had a pleasant evening with some of the students at Bethune-Cookman University.  The campus Christian Life Club held a social.  The weather pattern had been lousy for the several days preceding the event, so it was moved from the Quad (outdoors) to the new student center.  There was no inclement weather during the event, so it would have been better to have done it as planned, but it was hard to take the chance.

Then the next evening I worked with Mike Cummings' new band at Finnegan's South, in South Daytona.  I had worked with Spike previously when he was guitarist in Naked Rachel.  The new band was well received at Finnegan's and I recommend that you catch the act if you get the chance.

On Sunday I was back down to the SBI for another Alize show.  The weather had been a bit moist all week, but Sunday at the SBI turned out to be a beautiful day.  A regular part of the afternoon entertainment at the SBI is to have the local sky divers club jump to the beach in front of the deck.  They put on their regular show, which is a real crowd pleaser.

This past week I provided sound reinforcement for Alexis Freeman Ministries  hosting its Women In Worship Women's Retreat in Cocoa Beach Florida. There was a lot of good music at the event.  One of the highlights was a concert by Mister Talkbox, Byron Chambers.  Byron is part of the Chambers family, a well known Gospel vocal group.  He had toured with major secular acts and is a polished showman.  Byron uses a keyboard to drive his talkbox, so he has a unique sound.  Byron's MySpace page is here.

Last weekend was Labor Day weekend.  For many years the BCASCA Jamboree was held Labor Day weekend and I provided sound reinforcement for the event.  That event has been moved to the Memorial Day weekend, due to the threat of hurricanes this time of year.  I did work with the band Alize at the SBI on Sunday.  The weather behaved and it was a beautiful day.  The local sky diving club often makes jumps to the beach in front of the SBI.  There were 12 or 13 sky divers last Sunday.  That always makes an interesting show.

I returned from the Sturgis rally at about 1:00 AM on the 18th.  On the 24th I was back at Mark's Caribbean Cuisine with Alize for the Jam/Party.

Then Sunday afternoon I went to the SBI with Alize for the Sunday Reggae Party on the Ocean Front Deck.  The weather was a bit threatening when we arrived, but the radar showed that the storm was moving inland.  The day turned out to be beautiful, if a little warm.  Mike brought his DJ, LouieLou, to play between the sets.  Louie has worked with Mike for many years.  We recorded direct to CD and I hope to put a few tracks up in a player soon.  The band is scheduled to play again next Sunday and on the 16th of September at the SBI.  This is a very pleasant spot to spend a Sunday afternoon.  The band plays from around 2 to 7 this time of year.

As it ended up I got a last minute call for a little gig with Alize at a Caribbean restaurant in the plaza on the south east corner of University Drive and Dean Road in Orlando called Mark's Caribbean Cuisine (as listed on the Eat Jamaica Site).  Mike McKenzie of Wheels to Wings Transportation fronts the band.  Orlando Reggae artist Angel sat in for a few numbers.  Her band will be one of the acts performing at the planned weekly Friday night shows at Mark's.

The gig with Vio7 at Inlet Harbor went well.  I ended up taking my board and rack in for the show. At the beginning of the third set Armand invited two Bulgarian musicians to the stage.  He and one of his friends played acoustic violins and the third member played a cello.  They were backed by the drummer and electric bass player.  Among the numbers that they did was a rendition of Eleanor Rigby.

Thank you to Butch of BT's Music for showing me around.  He installed the system there and set up for a Pat Travers Band show there the evening before.  I stopped in to see what I would have available to work with at the venue.

As with the rally news, it has been far too long since I updated this page.  I have kept busy enough between the rallies.  I will try to be more conciencious about logging my gigs in the future.  At some point there was quite a pleasant show at Cpt. Hiram's.  This one was with a new artist from California named Tyrone Wells.  I enjoyed the music.  We also did shows with Pato Banton and Maxi Priest at Cpt. Hiram's since my last entry.

On the Forth of July we did a Inner Circle show at the Melbourne Dog Track.

I did a Sunday evening with 506 at JJ Whispers in Orlando.

Last week I did the Body Builders TV networking conference and tapeing session at the Renessance Hotel conference room at The World of Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.  A U tube spot about the event can be viewed here.  Next years event is planned for the 16th through the 19th of July in the same venue.

Tomorrow evening I am working with Vio7 at Inlet Harbor Restaurant in Ponce Inlet.

This may be the last thing that I do locally before the trip to Sturgis before the Rally.  I may still do Sunday at the SBI with Alize, but I should drive to Atlanta on Sunday.  We are dropping Eman off in South Bend, Indiana and picking him up on the return trip, so we may spend an extra day on the Road.  The pull from Atlanta to Council Bluffs is really too long anyway, so breaking the trip up will not hurt.

Last weekend was a busy one.  Saturday, the 5th, we did a Pat Travers show at Dale's Ales in Orange City, Florida.  The weather co-operated and the show was well attended.  Pat gave us a very good show.  He is playing four piece now, and works very well with the second guitar player producing some fine guitar harmonies.  The show was opened by Joe Santana and the Motley Jackson Band.

Sunday there was an Alise show at the SBI.  The weather did not co-operate so well, but when the rain came the band moved inside and continued the show.  The SBI is located near Sebastion Inlet on A!A south of Melbourne, Florida.  They have a beautiful ocean front deck and have a Raggae party Sunday afternoons through the summer.

This past week I provided sound reinforcement for the Church of God - Cocoa Office Woman's Ministries Conference.  As always the music committee was a big part of the event.  Evening messages were presented by Evangelist Jennifer Porter-Cox.  There were morning workshops on Thursday and the traditional Luncheon on Friday.  The event was held in the ballroom of the Rosen Centre hotel on International Drive in Orlando, next door to the Orange County Convention Center.

On the 15th I had the great pleasure of setting up for an American Cancer Society benefit held at the VFW Post 4250 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Rhonda Patrick opened the show delayed about an hour and a half due to a morning rain storm.  Then post member Greg Whitlock's band, The Ride, took the stage.  Next was the fine artist Magda Hiller from Deland entertaining with a solo performance.  Finally, The Ernie Lancaster Band closed the show.  Bill Van Dyke, the post Chaplin, organized and MC'ed the event.  Over $1200 was raised for the American Cancer Society.

Easter Sunday I mixed the special Easter service for a church in New Smyrna.  This year it was held in the New New Smyrna High School auditorium.  The church band consisted of drums, bass, keyboards, percussion, and a horn player.  The praise team had 4 to 6 voices, with the pastor joining in on a few songs.  There was a themed presentation on the crucification and resurrection of Jesus.  There were junior and senior dance troupes.  This was my second Easter with this group.
