Woodall Family Data     Early Woodall Data

Test Results

We now have a total of seventy (70) kits ordered and sixty-four (64) kits returned to the lab.   The results to date are very interesting  indicating more Y-DNA testing is needed to better understand the Woodall surname family.

We've had some surprises and expect more.  We have learned one Woodall family group is fathered by an American Indian and another family group was mothered by a Woodall but fathered by a Duncan.  We also have a testee with a Farr surname that matches a Woodall Y-DNA line and is looking for his connection to the Woodall family.  We have two testees with the O'Dell surname that is a very close match to several Woodall's.  Maybe there is an O'Dell - Woodall connection.  And now we have a Cook that matches a Woodall Y-DNA line and is looking for his connection to the Woodall family

Based on the results received to date, we have identified eighteen (18) Woodall  families, with 17 different Y-DNA patterns, four different haplogroups, 27 unique 12 marker strings, 24 unique 25 marker strings, 22 unique 37 marker strings and 4 unique 67 marker strings.

Four of the families have connections in England.

The testing to date has confirmed, for the most part, the hard work of Woodall family researchers of the over the last 30 years.  However, there are to date at least five cases where the paper trail generated by research has NOT been confirmed by DNA.  This indicates one should not feel comfortable with that well defined paper trail connecting one to a  great-great grandfather Woodall unless one has DNA test results to confirm it. Not using this new DNA tool is like saying I am not going to order that birth certificate or death certificate because I known the data I have is correct.  Use this new tool as one more data point to confirm your paper trail.

It is evident from the test results that the William and John we thought were sons of our DNA John are not his biological sons.  Data now indicates the William we have a documented genealogy paper trail for and now DNA test results is probably a different William Woodall than William the son of DNA John.  Some new data that helps confirm this position is posted on this site.  There is also currently some discussion that some of the sons given to John, son of DNA John, may actually be the sons of William, son of DNA John.  And the web site has recently been updated to move Jacob from son of John to son of William.  This may not be correct - someone prove it wrong!

For those interested in father/son test results, we have one such set and they are listed in Family 3 as 27213 and 57797.  And, yes they match 37 of 37 markers.

It is very interesting that three of the four individuals that started this Woodall Surname DNA project have discovered facts that now set them apart from having the any Woodall Y-DNA in their families. However, I am sure their interest and support of the project  will continue.

Things are starting to take shape.  If you are a male Woodall, come join the fun.  Let's document this family from a DNA standpoint and help sort out some of the paper trails.  If you are interested in Genealogy one bit and have a Woodall connection, please consider supporting a male Woodall to take the 12 marker test.  That can be your way of supporting genealogy this year.

Recent activity has slowed.  Maybe those testee's with the 12 marker test results will upgrade as a Christmas present to themselves, thus some new data will be generated.
